Local Business Shoutout: Malikaqueenbys & As One Ummah

ree

The first time I met Syariefah, we ended up talking far longer than we were supposed to. She has that air around her that is so calming which makes it easy for anyone to open up to her. I love her sharings about her experience about umrah and I think that is what makes me miss Mekkah and Madinah even more.

For this August's Local Business Shoutout, I would like to introduce you to Syariefah and her businesses, Malikaqueenbys & As One Ummah.

Assalamualaikum Syariefah! It is nice to have you here! Do share a little about yourself and your businesses, Malikaqueenbys & As One Ummah.

Hi, I’m Syariefah — wife, mum of two, and proud cat mama 🐾. Co-founder of Malikaqueenbys & Founder of As One Ummah. I love meeting new people, trying good food, and spending my off days with my family (and cats!) 💛

Malikaqueenbys

Founded in 2021, Malikaqueenbys is a family-run business built with love by three women — myself, my sister Syariedah, and my sister-in-law Siti Masturah. We started from home, creating our own Muslimah clothing line that embraces oversized, modest styles while keeping them affordable. Each of us designs our own pieces, which are then tailor-made with special attention to quality fabrics suited for Singapore’s weather. Our goal is to make modest fashion comfortable, stylish, and accessible to everyone.

As One Ummah As One Ummah is a community-driven initiative I founded to bring people together through Islamic classes, events, and projects that inspire unity and compassion. It’s about creating spaces where we can learn, grow, and support one another — truly living as one ummah.

Can you describe the moment you decided to become a business owner?

In 2021, I took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship — first with Malikaqueenbys, a family business I started with my sister Syariedah and sister-in-law Siti Masturah. What began from our home has grown into a modest fashion brand known for oversized, comfortable, and affordable pieces, designed with fabrics perfect for Singapore’s weather. Each design carries our personal touch, love, and vision to make modest wear accessible to everyone.

Later, I founded As One Ummah, together with my husband and 6 others team members — not for profit, but for purpose. It’s a space to give back to the community through Islamic classes, events, and initiatives that bring people together, strengthen faith, and inspire unity. Both ventures are different in nature, but share the same heart: building something meaningful with love, sincerity, and a vision to uplift others. 💛

What do you tell yourself to stay motivated in doing business?

Alhamdulillah — I am grateful for where I am, and I am here for a reason. Everything I do is ultimately for Him, and keeping that perspective helps me stay focused, humble, and driven to continue creating with purpose and grateful every step of the way.

What is the routine you set for yourself everyday?

My daily routine? Sholat to start the day right, a good breakfast 😋, then planning and focusing on upcoming classes and next year’s goals. Keeps me organized and ready to take on each day with purpose.

What are some of the obstacles you faced while building your business?

Building a business is never without challenges. For me, some of the obstacles included starting from home with limited resources, learning how to design and tailor clothing that balances style, comfort, and affordability, and navigating the demands of running a business while managing family life. There were moments of doubt and uncertainty, but each challenge became a lesson — teaching me patience, perseverance, and the importance of trusting the journey

What are the most rewarding aspects of being a business owner?

The most rewarding aspects of being a business owner are seeing ideas come to life, creating something meaningful with my family, and making a positive impact on others. It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch customers enjoy our designs, to connect with the community through As One Ummah, and to know that the work we put in contributes to something bigger than ourself. Every small success reminds me that the journey — with its ups and downs — is truly worth it.

Who are your role models?

My role models are those who inspire me to lead with faith, wisdom, and dedication. Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for his patience and unwavering guidance, and his wife Khadijah, a remarkable woman and businesswoman who led with integrity. I also look up to my father for his wisdom and values, and my incredible team of seven motivated and talented individuals who inspire me with their dedication and positivity. Each of them have their own strength.

What tools, systems, books or resources would you recommend to all business owners?

I don’t have specific tools or systems to recommend, but I believe all social media platforms and Google are great for searching and learning whatever you need as a business owner. As for books, since our work is connected to the Islamic community, the Quran is truly the best guide — for wisdom, inspiration, and guidance in both life and business.

How do you find creativity and inspiration for your business ideas?

I find inspiration and creativity for my business in everyday life, people, and my faith. Observing trends, listening to customers, and seeing what resonates with the community sparks new ideas. I also draw creativity from my sisters and team, brainstorming together to turn ideas into designs or projects. And most importantly, I turn to my faith and the Quran, which remind me to create with purpose, intention, and sincerity.

What advice will you give to aspiring business owners?

My advice to aspiring business owners is to start with purpose and patience. Focus on what you love, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to learn from mistakes along the way. Surround yourself with supportive people, keep your faith close, and remember that success isn’t just about profit — it’s about creating something meaningful and making a positive impact. And always be humble and approachable.

What is the future going to be like for you and your businesses?

The future for me and my businesses is all about growth, connection, and impact. For Malikaqueenbys, we aim to reach more people through booths, events, doing Live Sales and collaborations, bringing our modest fashion to a wider audience. For As One Ummah, we’re planning more classes, workshops, and community events to inspire, educate, and connect people. Beyond planning and working hard, the rest I leave to Allah SWT, trusting Him to guide the journey.
