Local Business Shoutout: aweSEWm

It is really amazing to see someone I knew when I was younger, grow and build their business over the years. I may not be a customer yet but I am definitely an admirer. Watching from afar as one of my secondary school friends, Ili, creates her brand, aweSEWm while she is holding multiple roles.

So this August, I would like to give a business shoutout to my long-time friend, Ili and let's find out how she manages aweSEWm.

Hello, Ili. It has been awhile! Can you share a little about yourself and your business, aweSEWm?

A mom of four with nursing background who now sits on her crafty table and creates magic✨️

Founded in 2018, aweSEWm initially was a customized baby and kids apparel business before it has expanded to include creating crafts for birthdays and special occasions now.

What made you start your business?

I have always love customization items as they are unique and reflects the owner's personality. There are many variations in ways it can be done while others love simplicity. When my son was born, I love to have his name on his clothes and blanket so I started aweSEWm. Now other parents can enjoy that too.

What is the most challenging part of your daily process when it comes to your business?

I always emphasize on quality products so my customers can keep them as momentos after their special occasions. The supplies don't come cheap. Some requests require specific items that costs more but the customers are not willing to fork it out. I hope customers understand that if the product requires a lot of items, it cannot be the charged the same as the basic choice.

Another challenge is last minute requests where they require the product to be received by the next day. I need at least 2 days to make them as a rushed product will not be presentable.

What is the most rewarding part of business?

When my customers are excited and satisfied of the product they received, it made my day to know I put smiles on their faces. I also gain more techniques on my creations from their requests.

What resources (books, podcasts) help you in building your business?

The crafting communities are globally recognized and close knit. We have workshops, summits and we share with each other techniques to create. I'm very fortunate to be able to join them and learn so much.

How to you unwind from the stresses of your business?

My four kids and cat are my joy and when I have my me-time, I will seek my communities for inspirations and support.

What advice do you have for aspiring business owners?

Never give up and believe in your abilities. It is a very competitive world but no one can do like how you do it. Always be willing to learn and accept feedback positively. It helps us to improve.

What can we look forward from you and your business in the future?

I want to conduct classes and teach people crafting! To join as a speaker in the summit and share my creations are some of my goals.
